Dan Patten Blog: The Run-In is Approaching…

Well we’ve hit September and so the final month or so of the season for the Dan Patten Blog. The good news is I’m still feeling motivated to race and race hard to finish off the year. The bad news is the last few weeks I’ve been caught out with a bit of illness that seems to be going round these parts at the moment, and which has proved hard to shake off.

Despite this, the last few weeks has seen three more top 10 results for the palmares. Battling performances for a 6th in Schellebelle and a 5th in Erpe Mere may well have seen the next win if I hadnt felt so “off”.

Before this though, no doubt came my strongest performance of the last few weeks.

A kermesse race in WambeekTernat, which featured a long cobbled climb on each circuit, was to see me earn the respect of kermesse legend Mario Willems.

Dan puts the hurt on some big name Kermis riders.

I rode aggressively throughout – ‘Willems style’ – and played a big part in the race. Unfortunately my last bid for freedom saw me being pulled back around 1.5km to go. I would end up 7th, so not the win I was looking for, but Mario made a point of coming up to me after to shake my hand and acknowledge the way I had ridden. OK, not the win, but it’s more respect earned from another kermesse legend, along with others such as Tony Bracke, and the way I see it that can only be a good thing.

My mechanic/soigneur said he had never seen him do this before, so its good for me to know that I am making a good impression on the guys who are winning races in the heartland week-in week-out.

It’s certainly been up against me the last few weeks but after racing yesterday, and finally getting some good sensations in the legs and my body allowing me to open up, it’s a relief to finally believe that the worst of it is over, and that my season’s not: finished. Also,: illness aside, the body is actually: feeling good, which can only bode well for the remainder of the season.

Yes, the end of the season is drawing closer but I will be continuing to race and trying to add to that win tally. As always there’s plenty of races about and so my season continues.

My Belgian ‘fanbase’ are still out there supporting me (haha) and so I’ll be on the hunt for some more wins.

Of course, less bike time over the last few weeks has meant for more café time in town. Being based in Oudenaarde we are lucky to have the Ronde van Vlaanderen museum here, which also hosts a café: it’s the perfect place to go grab a coffee, watch a bit of cycling on TV and meet some new people.

Mind the gap.

It’s become a bit of a regular hanging-out place and I’m starting to feel like part of the family there, lol.

If you’re ever in Oudenaarde be sure to check it out – especially if you would like to meet the cycling legend that is Freddy Maertens.

I’ll be hitting the kermesses hard now, so, until next time…

Dan Patten.

PS. A big thank you to Callum Gough, whose apartment I’m staying in for the remainder of the season. It’s helped me out big time. Bedankt!

Coming Close in Merelbeke

Best part of 200 riders, good crowds, the music playing, the beer flowing and the kermesse burgers cooking... all the elements of a typical kermesse here in Merelbeke, Belgium. I made the point of being on the front from the start here, knowing like usual it would explode from the off and not wanting to be caught too far back when it did. Not long into the frist lap and I found myself in the first move off the front but this was to be pulled back only a few kms later. After a few laps in the bunch I thought it was time to try again...

Dan Patten Blog; Only a matter of time…

Time again for a Dan Patten Blogupdate as this 2012 season in Belgium continues. Yet again the consistency has continued but also now I can happily say that consistency has been rewarded with some wins.

Dan Patten Blog – My First Win of the Season

So its been a long time since my last blog posting way back at the end of February. Though I was looking to keep the posts coming frequent, the simple fact of the matter is I've been in a pretty uninspired writing mood over the past months.

Dan Patten’s Blog – Up and Running with the First Win!

So it's been coming and I'm happy to say I have my first win of the 2011 season in Belgium! And oh, what a fine day it was. Everything fell into place and to finish it off with the win was extra special. After a lot of bad luck before and in the earlier part of the season with injuries, crashes and what-not, it's a nice feeling now that things are going my way. Patience has paid off! If you're a VeloVeritas regular you'll be aware that we take full advantage of our, "right to rant." Freedom of Speech is something we take for granted in a Western Democracy. But recent events in Paris remind us that it's a principle which people surrender their lives to uphold.

Le Tour de France 2010, Stage 14: Revel-Ax3 Domaines; Playing Poker

We left Ax3 Domaines this morning, and are now in Lourdes - a strange place, like a religiously themed Blackpool; only it's not little replicas of the tower they're selling, rather all manner of tat plastered with religious images. The last time I was there was with Martin, we sat, stunned in a late night pizza place - yellow jerseyed Rasmussen had just been sent home from le Tour by Rabobank.

UCI Points and a Pain in the Neck

Long time no blog! Since my last blog a lot has happened in my world. First up was the Superprestige in Zonhoven. I rode really well on the uber-tough sandy course and picked up another top 20, eventually finishing 16th. I was really pleased as I don't get to race in sand much and it shows I have the needed skills to compete well in those conditions which until that race I hadn't really believed I could...

Franco Marvulli, twice world madison and scratch champion, four times winner of the Grenoble six and a winner of 25 sixes in total; Jens-Erik Madsen, world team pursuit champion; Luke Roberts, multiple world team pursuit champion; Iljo Keisse, kermesse star and winner of 11 six days; Leon Van Bon, twice Dutch pro road champion and a Tour and Vuelta stage winner - that's not a bad list for starters.
