Last night at the Gent Six Day 2010? It’s tonight, already!

No-one stood out, the home boys had to be seen to do well and De Ketele, Mertens, and of course Iljo, all did the biz.

Who can win?

Alex & Michael are favourites but it’s been a long season for both of them and there are some hungry big fish in this pond.

Top of the Barracuda list are Robert Bartko and Danilo Hondo – if it was decided on coolness alone then the verdict would go to Danilo his position is perfect, plenty of seat pillar on show, long extension hard down on the head race.

There’s very little upper body movement. He looks fantastic – it’s easy to forget he was a World Team Pursuit silver medallist back in 1994.

Hondo’s partner, ‘Big Bob’ Bartko, is one of the great track riders of the modern era; Olympic individual and Team Pursuit Champion in 2000 at Sydney; World Pursuit Champion in ’99, ’05 and ’06; World Team Pursuit Champion in ’99, and 15 wins in Six Days off 59 starts – and in his Rabobank days he was capable of winning events like the Three Days of West Flanders.

Iljo certainly looks sharp and his partner Peter Schep is classy, he looks like he’s on rails and has a string of Worlds Points Race medals to his credit.

But there’s a protocol to six day races and one is that you can’t come back after four months without a race and win.

If I’m any judge then it’ll be third spot on the podium for Iljo and Peter.

Successor to Bruno Risi as ‘Blue Train’ conductor is Danny Stam, this is his 101st six, and with 16 wins there’s no shortage of experience.

Danny has won here before, in 2004 with Slippens – Viktor and I were here to witness that, and they were spectacular.

Danny always wants on the podium, but Leon Van Bon isn’t Bob Slippens. Photo©Ed Hood

He’s very strong and hugely experienced (he took a silver medal in the Worlds Road Race at San Sebastian in 1997 after all), but there’s no ‘spark’ to him in my opinion – even though he’s reinvented himself well as a six day rider, with 29 starts and one win.

Kenny De Ketele has paid his dues, 32 Sixes with one win. He’s paired with classy German, Leif Lampater.

Some might say that Lampater’s sSix wins off 14 starts in Six Days is largely down to his choice of partners – Erik Zabel and Robert Bartko.

But being paired with Zabel or Bartko speaks for itself; riders at the top of their game won’t ride with ‘duds’ or ‘learners’ – that comes if you chose to prolong your career and wind down. So, this pairing could win.

There’s only one other pairing who can win – Franco Marvulli and Alexander Aeschbach.

Franco has been unwell but is well on the way back, his morale is good and those time trial wins speak for themselves – he won the 500 metres tonight.

But if truth be told, it’s the Zurich Six that really counts for a Swiss rider and I think that if he makes the podium here, he’ll be happy.

Three podium spots and six teams worthy of a place – that doesn’t ‘go!’

Tomorrow I’ll try and talk a bit more about what’s actually going on in the racing – it’s been a wee bit hectic today.

In February 2023 however, our dear friend and beloved colleague Ed suffered a devastating stroke and faces an uncertain future; Ed has lost his ability to speak, to read, and has lost movement on the right side of his body. He's working with speech and physical therapists on rehabilitation, but all strokes are different and each patient responds differently, so unfortunately recovery is one day at a time. Ed ran his own business installing windows, and will probably not be able to work again. Tour of Britain 2006 – Stage 1, Glasgow to Castle Douglas

The Tour of Britain 2006 kicked-off in Glasgow on Tuesday morning with a 101.1 mile haul from Glasgow to Castle Douglas. Last year Evan Oliphant (Recycling) grabbed an excellent second place on a stage behind Russian champion Sergei Ivanov (T-Mobile). This year he'll be talking to VeloVeritas every day after the stage, we caught-up with him before the stage whilst he was stocking-up on victuals for the stage and receiving a light massage.

Rantings from Sanremo and a Visit to Masi Bikes

"Sanremo al debutto Cannonball fenomeno" says today's La Gazzetta Sportivo - that's its Sunday name. "Cannonball," every rider must have a nickname for the continental press, I suppose. If he keeps up his line of progression it'll only be a short while before The Mail is calling him, "Cava."

Ponferrada World Road Championships 2014 – U23 Men, Sven Erik Bystrom Takes it Solo

Well, if there's a pizza place in Ponferrada, we can't find it. It's rude to criticise your host's abode but we're mystified by how the Worlds came to be here. The communications are terrible, it's four-and-a-half hours by road or rail out of Madrid or get transfer flights up to the North West and more driving.

Berlin Six Day 2013 – Final Report

A crowd of around 12,000 filed into the Landsberger Allee Velodrome tonight for the Berlin Six Day 2013. The large numbers continued a trend for the Six Days - with an estimated 70,000 coming through the doors - attendance figures are up rather than down, a good sign going forward.

Le Tour de France 2012 – First Rest Day

Bonjour! VeloVeritas joins le Tour. The hotel is the Formule 1, Viry, with a wonderful view of a pile of tyres – it’s a glamorous life. But we’re not complaining. Easyjet, Edinburgh to Geneva wasn’t too bad, finding the car hire was a bit of a magical mystery tour but we were soon headed for Mâcon, our credentials and the Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank hotel.

Dan Gardner – After a season of two halves, it’s destination AN Post

The last time we spoke to Dan Gardner he’d just ridden the 2015 Worlds TTT in Virginia as part of the American Astellas team. This season saw him back with Astellas for the first part of the season before a mid-season move to the Heartland – Flanders – and a ride with the Baguet Bicycle Center Cycling Academy. The man behind the team, Serge Baguet is a Belgian ex-professional who rode for Lotto and QuickStep and can count a Belgian Elite Road Championship and Tour de France stage among his palmarès.

Winding Down and Firing Up

We have arrived! Well, to be honest, it’s been a few days now, but the dust has only really settled enough to write anything as of today. We’re staying a little out of town, allowing us the opportunity to train without the stress of dealing with the traffic of London, the slog of battling other athletes for everything in the Village, and the chance for the boys to decompress, relax and recover after the Tour.

The VV View: LanceGate is divisive, no question

LanceGate is divisive, no question. Our editor, Martin and I have similar views on many things in cycling – but not on this one. Martin thinks that the boil must be lanced; (pun intended) get the puss out before the healing can begin. My feeling is that what’s happening is the equivalent of dropping a nuclear depth charge into a huge cesspit – spectacular, very messy and with no real positive effect, unless you’re a tabloid editor or a ‘forum sitter.’
