We’re at the Grenoble Six Day 2011 and it’s a glorious day in Grenoble, warm, calm, sunny – not a day to be stuck in a stuffy stadium.

But that’s the runner’s place in the way of things – scrambled eggs on fresh baguettes for breakfast eased the pain.

The 35 minute chase was a better show tonight and the French guys didn’t get pummeled quite so savagely.

The Spaniards have surprised, they’ve been riding strong and clever – always going with the big teams and never going alone.

We didn’t know what to expect, but it transpires Mora was 2010 U23: European madison and scratch champion whilst Torres has a World Cup team pursuit podium and European U23 pursuit bronze to his name.

I can remember Danny riding with Robert Slippens: at Gent a few years back; mounted on their matching black Giants running pink Dugast tyres – they looked the business.

They rode in cavalier fashion, fast and sharp – Danny has never been the same since Slippens retired after a very bad crash; ‘I feel a little bit alone,’ as he put it.

Ed Hood
Ed's been involved in cycling for over 50 years. In that time he's been a successful time triallist, a team manager and a sponsor of several teams and clubs. He's also a respected and successful coach and during the winter months was often working in the cabins at the Six Days for some of the world's top riders. Ed remains a massive fan of the sport and couples his extensive contacts with an inexhaustible enthusiasm for the minutiae and the history of our sport. In February 2023 however, our dear friend and beloved colleague Ed suffered a devastating stroke and faces an uncertain future; Ed has lost his ability to speak, to read, and has lost movement on the right side of his body. He's working with speech and physical therapists on rehabilitation, but all strokes are different and each patient responds differently, so unfortunately recovery is one day at a time. Ed ran his own business installing windows, and will probably not be able to work again. Grenoble Four Day 2012, Day Three: Kenny & Iljo or Morgan & Brian?

My pal Vik called me this morning; ‘the racing at the Grenoble Four Day can’t be very good if you’re spending so much time taking pictures of boys on the trapeze!’ If I could get him down here it would be different. It’s not just a bike race; if he was here, eating the nice food, drinking champers with friends, with the race whizzing around him and the amazing shows, he'd see things in a new light.

Le Tour de France 2013 – Stage 16: Vaison-la-Romaine > Gap, 168km. Solo Win for Rui Costa

We left Vaison-la-Romaine this morning on Stage 16, and we got to thinking; if you’re in love with the sport, sometimes it breaks your heart. I can remember sitting in my living room watching Bjarne Riis and Luc Leblanc squabble by the roadside about whether the race should continue during the ‘Festina Tour’ – a race ultimately won by Marco Pantani.

Old School Climbing Test (Preview: TDF 2012 Stage 11)

Today is the first “High” mountaintop finish. Stage 7 was considered “Medium”, and looking at the pictures of the stage today, one can see why! This is a short, mountainous stage that may well see fireworks from the big hitters. When considering the terrain, there isn’t really any respite throughout the stage, and it is a virtual guarantee that Vincenzo Nibali, Jurgen van den Broeck and Cadel Evans will equally attempting to make things difficult for the SKY super team.

In 2018, his Championship win was his 12th hill climb success off 15 starts - impressive.
