Gent Six Days 2011 – Night Four

-

HomeDiariesGent Six Days 2011 - Night Four

Whether it’s a great edition of the Gent Six Days 2011 or not, it’s still quite an experience to walk up through the tunnel for the first time.

Especially if the Dernys are up on the track droning out their monotonous tune, there’s the buzz of a thousand conversations, the lights, the throng, the smell of beer, the renners flashing around the bankings, the people piled high up to the roof in the corners – we love it!

Martin and Gillian gave me a lift to Edinburgh Airport and then, in their hire car from Charleroi up to the track in Gent.

Gent Six Days 2011
We’re ‘t Kuipke – bound. (say “kwep-kih”. Means “small oval”).

We had a struggle with the radio but once we got the hang of it, there was KC and Barry White. In a winter hire car though, all you really need to worry about are the heater and the radio – all else is incidental.

Gent Six Days 2011
The track is nestled in the Citadel park – a great setting.

My creds and Martin and Gill’s tickets were waiting for us at the ticket desk – get changed and get to work for me; find a beer and a hotdog for them.

Gent Six Days 2011
Gillian, John Anderson of thebicycleworks.com and Renner fame, and Martin enjoy a wee glass of the local brew.

I’m writing this on Tuesday morning as we pass Basel en route to Zürich for the ‘4’ – that doesn’t seem right, somehow.

But ‘4’ [days] it is, down from ‘6’ last and every other year, in an effort to cut costs – Grenoble goes the same way for 2012.

Gent Six Days 2011
Our rider Jesper Mørkøv takes in some of the U23 racing.
Gent Six Days 2011
As well as Jesper, we’re looking after Franco Marvulli.
Gent Six Days 2011
Silvan: Dillier: and Claudio Imhof.

So Friday night now seems like a long time ago and I don’t remember much about it – except that it was 03:00 am when I got to bed and that top bunk was just braw.

Gent Six Days 2011
Ed and Kris’ domicile for the next week or so.

Inbetween Days, Rotterdam to Bremen

It's an easy life on the sixes; we bailed out of the truck stop at around 10:00 then drove for four hours to Bremen airport to collect 32 year old American rider Bradley Huff - he's one of our riders for the Bremen Six Day.

Le Tour de France 2009 – Stage 3: Marseille > La Grande-Motte, 196.5km

Mark Cavendish soared to his second straight win in the Tour de France today to La Grande-Motte, winning the sprint from a small bunch and strengthening his overall hold on the green jersey.

Roadside at Het Nieuwsblad 2020

We're roadside at Het Nieuwsblad 2020; since the race went World Tour the start just isn’t the same; the buses used to line up in the street, you could look at the bikes right until start time and brush shoulders with the riders as they pedalled to the sign-on. Not now, whilst some of the buses park up outside, the majority park in the huge 30’s exhibition hall adjacent to the Kuipke Velodrome in Ghent...

Rotterdam Six Day 2011-Day Three, Musical Riders

It was 'musical riders' on Saturday night at the Rotterdam Six Day 2011: Franco is out with sickness; his partner, Netherlands road race champion, Niki Terpstra now goes with tall pursuiter, Jens Mouris. Terpstra is a big draw and has to be a part of the race; he can't continue to sit-out the chases.

Rotterdam Six Day 2011 – Day Two, Iljo and Kenny Take Over. Uh-oh.

Here at the Rotterdam Six Day 2011 the buzz off iljo's rollers fills my ears as I write this; despite the best efforts of the UCI, he's still here and looking sharp. My amigo, Dirk the mechanic was telling me that Iljo is retaining two of the three best lawyers in Belgium - I'm glad I'm not paying the bills.

Giro d’Italia 2012 – Stage 2: Herning 206km. Cav is King!

Giro d'Italia 2012 - Stage 2 and Cav is King. If these were Medieval times I'd have to throw myself on his mercy. Prostrate myself at the foot of the steps to the Sky bus, next Monday in Frosinone. Trust that in the joy of his re-confirmation as king of Denmark he'd be merciful.

Saunier Duval Team Launch – Day 2

¡Hola! When Matxin, the DS at Saunier says; "six hours today", that's what he means. In fact it was six-and-a-quarter hours after we left the hotel when we returned to Granada. The day is up Pez here, but once again it showed what's involved in being a pro and also what it means to be a top pro. Saunier Duval.

Steve Cummings – the New British TT Champion is ‘The Real Deal”

Steve Cummings, he’s the real deal. Dues fully paid at low budget Landbouwkrediet and Barloworld, he’s also ridden with some of the biggest teams in the sport; Discovery, Sky and BMC - before finding what is the ideal squad for him, Dimension Data where letting him ‘do his own thing’ has paid off for both parties in spades.
