Saunier Duval Team Launch 2007 – Day 3

HomeDiariesSaunier Duval Team Launch 2007 - Day 3

The third day of the Saunier Duval Team Launch 2007, and it’s the big one, your actual team launch. I wrote-up my Gianetti and Ventoso interviews in the room first thing then came down for some grub. You can read the interview with Franciso here.

There was big Dutch guy, Remmert Wielinga just finishing breakfast, I asked about an interview, “how about right now?” says he. He didn’t have to say it twice, he’s a nice guy and I love the way he says, “for sure”. That interview was up last night and I let him see it this morning. He was pleased with it – “objective” he said, but told me that he’s had hassle with Dutch journos making-up quotes from him!

At 10.00 am I had an interview arranged with Pascal Ducrot, Scott’s main man in Europe.

I won’t re-hash it now. He’s like everyone around Saunier though – passionate.

By this time the Spanish journos were gathering but it didn’t seem to have occured to them to do anything – except talk to each other.

Dave Millar appeared in the lobby, I stalked him for a bit then, when he was on his own, I pounced. It was another, “we can just talk now” job.

He’s not a difficult guy to interview but he has that champion’s matter-of-factness about his own abilities that some may confuse for arrogance.

Since I was there and he was there I asked for an interview with Saunier Duval, Spain main man, Carlos Doria. Looking every inch the Euro-exec, he gave me good answers and plenty of time. Guys like him know the value of cultivating the Press, even if it is just for a bike-specific North American website.

The launch was fun and a bit zany, some riders walked to the stage, some cycled, and some came by canoe through the pool!

It was all good fun though, and if the object is to get the flashguns going then it worked well. There was a ‘bash’ after it; the free wine and beer disappeared – ¡rapidamento!

The guys were wearing their new leisure gear by then – Simoni has a pal who has a clothes shop and it’s way-out kit – pin stripe jackets with fleece “hoodies” added. Again, if the objective is to get people talking, then it worked.

At last, the presentation.

David Millar sat beside us at dinner, he’s much in demand and very popular. His French is good but he’s just started to learn Spanish. Peter Slater from SIS (Science in Sport) is here, not only do they sponsor Jack Woodward, they are Saunier’s energy bars, drinks, and gel suppliers. I did my last interview of the day, with Pete and stumbled up to my room to word process for an hour.

No sleeping tablets neccessary on this gig…

World Road Championships 2006 – Day 3: A Little Downtime

Not much exciting so far at the World Road Championships 2006 and its gone 2.00 pm. I awoke to the bells at about 7.30 and was first in the shower room. Breakfast was fine, but there's still no small-talk in there; it's not a bad thing I guess-you are out the door pronto. I was sat in the press centre immediately it opened at 9.00 and I've been writing ever since. I did my piece about Vino, Zabriskie and Cancellara plus their respective bikes and since then I've been getting the old VeloVeritas dairy up to date.

Le Tour de France 2007 – Day 4: Stage 15, Foix – Loudenvielle Le Louron

The sun is hot even at 07.15, the autoroute is quiet, straight and fast; we're headed for le Tour and Loudenvielle Le Louron; Millie Jackson is telling us that her man is a "fine man" - what more could you want from life? It's 10.00 am now and we're on the descent off the first climb of the day, the second cat, Col de Port or Portet, depending on which sign you look at. Martin got his first look at le Tour village this morning, as always, the scrambled eggs were great and the coffee strong.

Het Nieuwsblad 2010 goes to Flecha

It was a difficult phone call to make, he picked up on the tone of my voice at once; 'no, don't tell me, please!' But it was best he heard it from me; 'Flecha, he won Het Nieuwsblad well, Viktor, sorry!' 'That's it, I'm finished with Pro Cycling, for good!'

Le Tour de France – Day 9: Stage 21, Etampes to Paris

Salle de Presse, Meridien Hotel, Paris, 18.55 Sunday July 27th. We were in Etampes, and we just watched Steegmans demonstrate how to sprint, he's a much better sprinter than he is a time triallist. Sastre won his, and CSC's first Grand Tour without drama, there was the usual show boating-'Carlos with glass of champagne', it says here on this script.

Cones Stop Play!

There was sunshine on Bishopton, a car park full of riders and shiny bikes - not sure about the guy on the fixed Dolan, though - lots of marshals, pieces to feed the five thousand, the requisite scout hall strip; and - the council cutting the verges down on Westferry. Cones Stop Play...

Le Tour de France 2013 – Stage 3: Ajaccio > Calvi, 145km. Gerrans from Sagan

Hood junior had already clued me in on the stage winner by text (there's about 400 metres of road, just outside the beach airport where you can receive a text); Simon Gerrans (GreenEdge & Australia) the former Aussie champion is a cool guy - when he won Milan-Sanremo I tried to ring him for a quote but went to ansaphone.

Grenoble Six Days 2011 – Second Night

It takes a few days to find the rhythm of a six-day - usually for me it's the sixth day. My feet stop hurting and I get a proper sleep. Last night I slept ok 'til around 06:00 am but after that it was disjointed, the sound of the traffic and the drone of the refrigeration units on the restaurant supply tucks saw to that - not to mention the bizarre dreams.
