Gent Six Day 2009 – Night Two; Iljo Keisse!

-

HomeDiariesGent Six Day 2009 - Night Two; Iljo Keisse!
Iljo Keisse
Iljo is certainly the star attraction here.

It’s different here; the butcher asks you how Iljo Keisse is doing in the Six and the local paper has him in full colour, on the cover.

In the same paper – De Gentenaar – which is a local ‘rag,’ there’s a two page guide to track racing and two pages of stats on the 2009 season.

Columbia are top winners, with 85 (I thought it was 86 !): Saxo have 44: Diquigiovanni 33; Garmin 29; Rabobank 26; Cervélo 25 – first Belgian team, on 24, is QuickStep.

Columbia top the team rankings in terms of all races, from Saxo and Rabobank but Astana top the official UCI rankings from Caisse and Columbia – reflecting the UCI weighting towards the Grand Tours.

Top Belgian winners on seven are Gilbert and Boonen; in third spot with six is a Viktor and Ed hero – ‘Rambo’ himself, Niko Eeckhout (AN Post). Another ‘oldie but goodie,’ ex Belgian elite champion, Gert Omloop nabbed three for Palmans-Cras.

Internationally, it’s Cav, with 23 to Greipel’s 20 with Boasson Hagen a distant third on 13.

Country wise, it’s France in terms of number of wins – 152 to Italy’s 144 and Spain’s 109. But De Gentenaar is dismissive of this, pointing out that there are a lot of small races in France and they don’t rate internationally.

As far as national rankings go, Spain are top, from Italy and Germany with the same two topping the UCI rankings from Australia in third.

All of this is in a local paper, not a glossy monthly cycling magazine.

Iljo Keisse
Garry Hagger, local crooner.

The walk to the shops takes you past Iljo’s dad’s bar, with all it’s cycling memorabilia; the 2008 Tour de France finish line, where Steegmans won the stage and not forgetting Maurice Burton’s old house.

It’s the heartland; last night the place was bursting at the seams.

Iljo Keisse
Iljo’s Dad’s Bar, De Karper.

The landlady of one of Dave Chapman’s Belgian racing days contemporaries from the early 80’s – John Mullen from New Zealand – was here last night. Not a young woman, but she’s at the Kuipke, hanging over the barriers to watch the racing.

Iljo Keisse
Gent, last week in November. The track centre is THE place to be.

‘Kuipke’ in Flemish means an old fashioned tin bath – which have the same shape as the track.

Iljo Keisse
It’s Franco’s turn, this time in the time trial.

You have to keep away from the crowd barriers or you’d spend the whole night organising programme signing or telling folks where Iljo’s cabin is placed.

Iljo Keisse
Those derny drivers ain’t exactly skinny.

I used to think that Iljo was a bit arrogant, but I’ve had to revise that, he never refuses autograph or photo requests – last night he was surrounded by drunks, all wanting their pictures taken with him. He just laughed his way through it – professional!

Iljo Keisse
A good guy, always time for people. Here, Iljo chats to the TV folk.

Our cabin is on the passage way to his and there’s a constant stream of press, TV, radio and photographers on the way to photograph/talk to/bore the man.

Alex and Michael take time out to chat with the press as well.

The racing has been good – maybe not 100% but I think there’s shadow boxing going on – despite that, there are riders wasted, up there.

Steve Schets and Steven De Neef were hauled off the track last night before the end of the second madison – Schets was a wreck.

The racing may be hard, but it’s tough being a spectator too!

Bendigo madison winners, Glenn O’Shea and Leigh Howard were big faves for the Worlds ’til O’Shea went down with chicken pox – Howard rode to silver with Cameron Meyer. But it’s not the same Leigh Howard – this one is having to dig too deep, too early.

Franco chills out between races with his book…
…then uses it as a pillow when he catches 40 winks.

It’s 19:42 on night three, I better get busy – it’ll be 02:00 am before this shift is over.

Alex prepares to set off for the hotel. Where’s yer lights?!

Ed Hood
Ed's been involved in cycling for over 50 years. In that time he's been a successful time triallist, a team manager and a sponsor of several teams and clubs. He's also a respected and successful coach and during the winter months was often working in the cabins at the Six Days for some of the world's top riders. Ed remains a massive fan of the sport and couples his extensive contacts with an inexhaustible enthusiasm for the minutiae and the history of our sport. In February 2023 however, our dear friend and beloved colleague Ed suffered a devastating stroke and faces an uncertain future; Ed has lost his ability to speak, to read, and has lost movement on the right side of his body. He's working with speech and physical therapists on rehabilitation, but all strokes are different and each patient responds differently, so unfortunately recovery is one day at a time. Ed ran his own business installing windows, and will probably not be able to work again. Please consider joining us to make a contribution to Ed's GoFundMe page to help stabilise and secure his future.

Havik and Van Schip top the Copenhagen Three Day

From the very first chase there was little doubt about who was in charge of the Copenhagen Three Day 2020; Dutchmen Jan Van Schip and Yoeri Havik were the strongest men on the track. In the recent UCI World Cup in Milton, Canada Van Schip won the Omnium then teamed up with Havik to win the Madison – so we knew they were on form.

World Road Championships – Mads Pederson surprises to win the Elite Mens’ Road Race

Denmark’s Mads Pederson drops to the wet Yorkshire tarmac, a hundred metres past the finish line, he can’t take in what he’s just accomplished. He has out-sprinted one of the foxiest and fastest men around, Matteo Trentin of Italy - the hot pre-race favourites for the title on this horror of a day.

Tour of Britain 2006 – Stage 2, Blackpool to Liverpool

Evan was out of the team car and just off the massage table when we caught-up with him after the second stage of the Tour of Britain 2006, into Liverpool, won by GB man Roger Hammond.

Le Tour de France 2017 – Stage 12: Pau – Peyragudes, 214.5km. Bardet confirms and Aru goes Yellow!

It wasn’t until inside the last kilometre at Peyragudes that the drama really unfolded; Bardet confirms, as does Aru, Froome cracks a little, Quintana cracks A LOT and much as it pains me; ‘one season too many, Bert!’ And Bennett and Martin impress, especially the latter who’s carrying injuries from that horrible crash with Porte on Sunday.

Gent Six Days 2011 – Night Six

On the one hand, the 18:00 finish is cool; but on the other, the lunch time kick off means that the last day is pretty hectic for the support staff. The result was never really in doubt and I thought that the last chase was poor. But I said all of that yesterday - and what I'm not taking account of is the huge gaps in the Six Day programme.

Giro d’Italia 2009 – Day 3: Rest Day

I just don't feel right in the mornings at the Giro d'Italia 2009 'til I get my Gazzetta. Dave drove past a couple of newsagents this morning, I could see the pink pages, but not get to them - it was terrible! Dave predicted that Carlos would get 9 out of 10 - he was spot on. Levi got 4 and the man that the Gazzetta loves to hate; Gibo Simoni didn't even get a mention. Silvi Marina was the destination; Dave battered the Peugeot down the Autostrada for our rendezvous with Rubens Bertogliati, Ben Swift and Dario Cioni.

The Lake APR: Preview

The event kicks off at 10.30am on the A811 just east of Buchlyvie and the course runs anti-clockwise twice round the Lake of Menteith finishing on the A875 after an uphill final stretch north through Balfron.
