Ah, the First Time!

-

Everyone remembers their first time. And after many years of flirtation and “everything but,” last night was JV’s.

Garmin have finally managed to break their cherry to win a stage at the Tour. Now that the hoodoo has been cleared, I’m expecting multiple wins throughout the race, with Tyler Farrar being first cab off the rank tonight with the Stage 3 Bunch Sprint.

Ah, the First Time
JV and the boys celebrate winning Stage 2 of Le Tour.

Today is a flat stage, and Mark Cavendish’s HTC Columbia will work with Garmin late in the day to ensure that the breakaway is caught, and a sprint is held. For me, the results will be;

  1. Farrar
  2. Cav
  3. Greipel.

The other big question of last night was “What’s In Wiggo’s Box”?

Heh. Well, not really, but there was a long strip of something under Wiggo’s kit, and speculation ranged from smokes, whiskey, jet pack, rectal temperature probe pack, water bottle, WalkMan, SmartPhone (to tweet on the road), or an iPod with the Who on full blast.

If you have any thoughts, hit twitter and use the hashtag #WiggosBox to put your thoughts out there.

In other, equally gripping news, the Velogames fantasy league continues apace, with team TobesVeloStars bringing it up the rear on 203 points. Currently leading is Tom Hopper, former Garmin mechanic, on 596 points. Hmmmm hate when the wrenches are in the lead! Other notable results — my boss Lemmo’sLackeys is on 475, Lions player Staker’sStars (who asked me for advice repeatedly prior to building his team) is on 384. Clearly he didn’t pay any attention to me!

The SBS Fantasy league hasn’t really changed since day 1, where I am also languishing at the bottom of the table, with my brother-in-law Roger dominating (and letting me know about it incessantly — bastard!) Cameron Memberey & James Lazarus (aka Garmin rider Matty Wilson) are on equal 2nd, and interestingly, Matty’s fiancee Meg is only a couple of points behind, threatening dominance in the Wilson/Prowd home!

Bring on tonight’s stage!

Two Weeks Out

Two Weeks Out. If the energy was up a week ago, things have gotten even more hyped for all of the teams headed to le Tour now. Cyclists will have ridden themselves into or out of spots as the final places are essentially solidified based on a combination of form, usefulness to team goals and personality.

Question Marks

Question Marks. Today is a long, lumpy stage with a kicker in the final 2km. It's not hard enough for the GC boys to do more than snipe a few seconds on each other here or there, but maybe too hard for the pure sprinters to be a part of the finale.

Exhaustion For The Exhausted (Preview: TDF 2012 Stage 18)

TDF 2012; The overall top three for the Tour is virtually locked in after the Pyrenees, with the likely result of the final time trial being to simply confirm the dominance of the two Sky boys, and shuffle a few of the lower places. Prior to that, we have a 221km stage that nominally should be a sprint stage, but likely sprint teams will need to be motivated to control things as it is a very tough day in the saddle. Exhaustion for those who are already exhausted.

Race Defining (Preview: TDF 2012 St16)

Ok. We’ve had our rest day, complete with (seemingly) obligatory drug bust, and we’re ready to dive into the final, defining week. More on Frank’s positive later. Now we see if the hard racing that has been inflicted upon the peloton has had any effect on Team Sky. It certainly showed with the break staying away and Fedrigo winning the stage over Christian “VDV” Vandevelde (DAMN I wanted to see him win one!) before the rest.

Attack! Attack!

Attack! Attack! After years of Lance Armstrong inspired sensible bike racing where the best teams would put all of their boys on the from to make life difficult throughout a stage and then have a final climb big gun hit out, early attacks are back. And we, the viewing public, are all the richer for it!

Spring Classics Have Sprung!

And so the warm weather (excluding Tour of the Med) precursors to the bike season proper have concluded. Down Under, Qatar, Oman, Algarve, etc have all had their brief moments in the spotlight, Langkawi has kicked off with a win to Zab in the time trial (no surprises that Zab is nowhere near the Classics! Not a sketchy conditions type of rider is the great DZ.) Now we head to the heartland of the sport and the portion of the season where the hardmen have their moments to shine.

Jamie Burrow – Keeping Busy with Business & Fondos

It's not often that the Comic [Cycling Weekly magazine - editor] inspires me, these days-they don't care, they get my subscription cash-but when I saw the 'minute with' ex Lance team mate and Fondo star Jamie Burrow, I thought; "there's a man I've been stalking, I need to get a grip of him!" His win this year in the Maratona delle Dolomiti was big news in Italia. Here's what he had to say...

Neil Fachie – “When you’re involved in Paralympic Sport, it’s hard not to be inspired”

No appraisal of Scotland’s cycling medal hopes for the 2018 Commonwealth Games would be complete without speaking to multiple Commonwealth, Worlds and Olympic visually impaired tandem champion, Neil Fachie. Here’s what the man had to say to VeloVeritas, recently:
