Grenoble Six Days 2011 – Third Night

HomeDiariesGrenoble Six Days 2011 - Third Night

Grenoble Six Days 2011… One day, I’d like to come to the Grenoble Six Days and sit at one of the big tables with friends and family, watch the cabaret, and the racing, chat, eat and drink too much.

It’s good value at 63 euros per head; that gets you in, allows you to attack the beautiful buffet and provides: you a bottle of wine, mineral water and a coffee as you watch the racing and the cabaret – one day… Oh dear!

It’s 11:00 pm and the ‘no limits’ is in full effect (that’s a standstill contest) – and yes, it’s as dire as it sounds.

If Vik finds out about this one, I’m in trouble.

He doesn’t like Grenoble, he’s seen my pics of the balloon lady and magician – if it was down to Vik we’d have a rider on the track for 24 hours, wouldn’t let the b**tard riders out of the stadium and would have then sleeping in the cabins.

Grenoble is all a bit, well, ‘French,’ but when you’re here, it’s actually pretty cool.

Gent is the ‘man’s six’ but that format wouldn’t work here; just like 34 minute standstills would have beer bottles raining onto the track at Gent.

Grenoble Six Days 2011
Standstills – not the most exciting spectator event.

Former track star Arnaud Tournant is up on the boards, pitted against Bauge; the record for this carry on is 45 minutes but thankfully Arnaud cracks around the half hour and Bauge get bored soon thereafter.

Danny soaks up his last few races.
Grenoble Six Days 2011
Danny’s BeOne. Nice, eh?

There are two chases, a 35 minute and a 20 minute; neither is scintillating but the riders whizzing by is just part of the show – as long as they’re not going so slow that Thevenet and Biondi start asking questions.

Grenoble Six Days 2011
Team 10 change.

I was chatting to some of the French guys today, they’re not even on Continental squads – just amateurs.

Jesper and Marc continue to lead, but when it gets serious, I have the feeling that Iljo and Morgan will be the men.

Grenoble Six Days 2011
Jesper chills out.

Franco’s motivation isn’t the best this year; on his day, he’s the best – but I haven’t seen him on ‘his’ day for a few races now.

Ed's been involved in cycling for over 50 years. In that time he's been a successful time triallist, a team manager and a sponsor of several teams and clubs. He's also a respected and successful coach and during the winter months was often working in the cabins at the Six Days for some of the world's top riders. Ed remains a massive fan of the sport and couples his extensive contacts with an inexhaustible enthusiasm for the minutiae and the history of our sport. In February 2023 however, our dear friend and beloved colleague Ed suffered a devastating stroke and faces an uncertain future; Ed has lost his ability to speak, to read, and has lost movement on the right side of his body. He's working with speech and physical therapists on rehabilitation, but all strokes are different and each patient responds differently, so unfortunately recovery is one day at a time. Ed ran his own business installing windows, and will probably not be able to work again. Giro d’Italia 2011, Stage 9: Messina – Etna 169km

'Tutti per Vincenzo' said the Gazzetta, on Sunday. 'All for Vincenzo' - but that little blighter from Madrid put paid to that. We got the benefit from the mad breenge after Saturday's stage - the Messina start was just five minutes from the hotel and it gave us time to have a wee skek at the porto, before we headed to Etna.

Saunier Duval Team Launch 2007 – Day 2

Saunier Duval Team Launch 2007. I got my SRAM piece away first thing this morning then ambled down for breakfast and to see if I could find Virginie, she's the Saunier PR girl - I met her at the Tour - she's a nice lass. I asked about interviews; "maybe tonight, but certainly tomorrow."

Copenhagen Six Day 2012 – Day Four

It's Sunday at the Copenhagen Six Day, and it's Sprints to start and Hazel Dean thumps out, quality high energy from the 80’s ‘Searchin’ — quality. Followed by ‘Livin in America’ from the late, great James Brown — we’re in luck, tonight.

Amsterdam Six Day 2014 – Part Two; a Race and Rider Review

Kris maybe summed it up best; 'it felt like a Monday night at any another Six Day.' There was none of the tension or expectation which usually precedes the final chase in a Six. Granted, we weren't looking after riders who were in the mix for the win but it was indeed, 'just another chase.' Maybe it was because it was clear from the start that Terpstra was the strongest man on the track and there was only going to be one winner.

The VV View: Froome’s Adverse Analytical Finding

Oh dear. I hate this carry on, writing about drugs scandals. And please, Froomists don’t pick me up on a point of semantics; to the man in the street, it’s a ‘drug scandal,’ pure and simple. OK, here goes. What’s up? The winner of the 2017 Vuelta a España, Christopher Froome of Team Sky returned an Adverse Analytical Finding for the asthma drug ‘salbutamol’ on Stage 18 of the race.

Drew Wilson – One of the Best Scottish Roadmen in the 80s and 90s

When I asked Drew Wilson (or 'Mr. Visualbikefit', as he’s known on social media) if he’d like to do a wee interview with us here at VeloVeritas he replied that he wasn’t sure he had enough interesting things to say? We said that we’d risk it and we’re glad we did…

The VeloVeritas Years – 2019: The Elite Road World Championships

We didn't realise when we made our way to the Civic Hall in Leeds for the sign-on of the 2019 Elite World Road Championships just what an epic day we were in for; emergency purchasing of umbrellas in the local outdoor centre didn't quite cut it as the deluge lasted almost the entire race.

Star of the Future: Luke Rowe – Already a Winner

It's not every day that a GB rider wins a Netherlands amateur classic; but that's exactly what 19 year-old Welshman Luke Rowe did recently in De 'arjaan De Schipper Trofee'-to give it the full Dutch treatment - a race won by a certain Fabian Cancellara, a few years ago.
