We’re at the Grenoble Six Day 2011 and it’s a glorious day in Grenoble, warm, calm, sunny – not a day to be stuck in a stuffy stadium.

But that’s the runner’s place in the way of things – scrambled eggs on fresh baguettes for breakfast eased the pain.

The 35 minute chase was a better show tonight and the French guys didn’t get pummeled quite so savagely.

The Spaniards have surprised, they’ve been riding strong and clever – always going with the big teams and never going alone.

We didn’t know what to expect, but it transpires Mora was 2010 U23: European madison and scratch champion whilst Torres has a World Cup team pursuit podium and European U23 pursuit bronze to his name.

I can remember Danny riding with Robert Slippens: at Gent a few years back; mounted on their matching black Giants running pink Dugast tyres – they looked the business.

They rode in cavalier fashion, fast and sharp – Danny has never been the same since Slippens retired after a very bad crash; ‘I feel a little bit alone,’ as he put it.

Ed Hood
Ed's been involved in cycling for over 50 years. In that time he's been a successful time triallist, a team manager and a sponsor of several teams and clubs. He's also a respected and successful coach and during the winter months was often working in the cabins at the Six Days for some of the world's top riders. Ed remains a massive fan of the sport and couples his extensive contacts with an inexhaustible enthusiasm for the minutiae and the history of our sport. In February 2023 however, our dear friend and beloved colleague Ed suffered a devastating stroke and faces an uncertain future; Ed has lost his ability to speak, to read, and has lost movement on the right side of his body. He's working with speech and physical therapists on rehabilitation, but all strokes are different and each patient responds differently, so unfortunately recovery is one day at a time. Ed ran his own business installing windows, and will probably not be able to work again. Sunday dawned bright and clear and it was three refreshed men who headed for Kuurne Brussels Kuurne. This was bike skeking taken to a new level; two-and-a-half hours of it, and it wasn't enough. The trouble with my usual Giro partner in crime, Dave being back in Scotia and suffering from Giro withdrawal symptoms (he's coming to le Tour, though) is that everything we write and photograph is subject to close scrutiny.

Le Tour de France 2006 – Day 4: Stage 1, Strasbourg – Strasbourg

Sunday in Strasbourg, stage one-a day for the sprinters. It was quite late when I got to sleep, I had a coffee in the hotel after I came in from my pizza place, it was too strong for a wimp like me late at night and my efforts to nod-off were also seriously hampered by demented French men driving around Strasbourg blowing their car horns all night.

The good news is that we can report that he’s alive and well and living in Hong Kong where, at 84 years-of-age he’s still working as a consultant.
