Zürich Four Days 2011 – Day Two

HomeDiariesZürich Four Days 2011 - Day Two

The hotel I’m in for the Zürich Four Days 2011 is nice, a double bed, en-suite shower and beautiful breakfast spread – but it’s a logistical pain.

Kris has to ‘make massage’ with Jesper at lunchtime, but I don’t want to hang around the hotel all morning – there’s work to do at the track.

I had to scrounge a lift – always a pain.

Iljo mashes his rollers.

The programme is pretty busy, with just the break for “Showtime” and the stayers race, late in the evening.

Zürich Four Days 2011
The programme isn’t bad – heavy on the motor-pacing, but you play to your audience we suppose.

Franco and Iljo look the best here; Kenny De Ketele/Tim Mertens are always solid and should be on the podium; Hondo/Bartko won here last year and whilst Danilo is the coolest man alive he was looking a tad frayed tonight.

Jesper ‘n’ Herster, aka Morkov and Marc.

Mr. Music, Peter Traynor, the Six Day DJ popped in to say hi.

Peter Traynor looked in to say hi, he’s only DJ’ing at this race this season, which is a pity as he’s the best at what he does, the sounds here are great. Have a look at the interview we did with him last year.

Big Bob is still strong, but not as strong, or as young as he used to be; it’s 11 years since he was double Olympic champion in Sidney – pursuit and team pursuit.

Perm those three teams for the podium.

Marc preps to change with Jesper.

At the other end, it’s a survival battle for our boy Dominique – he’s getting electronic treatment on his median lines as I write this – Thursday was better for him than Wednesday, if he makes it through tonight then he’ll get his full contract – good news for him (and us!).

Zürich Four Days 2011
Alex and Dominique exchange, but Dom is struggling a bit.

Poetry in motion.

I’m writing this on Friday night as the stayer race growls around us; and when it’s “on” it’s “on” – 50 miles per hour.

Zürich Four Days 2011
Very specialised machines and techniques required for this caper.

It’s slightly mad but I love it and all the little technical ‘ticks’ – modern adhesives or not, they still bandage the tubs on, down over the side walls and on to the rim.

If they puncture at 80 kph then they have to be sure the tyre and rim don’t part company.

Zürich Four Days 2011
One to go.

Franco’s in the next Derny – best get me skates on.

Ciao ciao.

Zürich Four Days 2011
The beautiful, rich and famous queue up to be seen with Franco.
Zürich Four Days 2011
We’re big fans of Jesper here, we think he’s going to be at least as good as his big brother.

Pete and his new pal.

Le Tour de France 2006 – Day 11: Stage 8, Saint-Méen-le-Grand – Lorient

Heading to Lorient today... There's a great old 70's film called, 'The Omega Man'. To cut a long story short, Charlton Heston is the last man left alive (by day anyway) in a post-viral world. He roams this completely deserted US city with not another living thing in sight.

Maurice Burton – British 20km Champion, 1974

It's Leicester's Saffron Lane velodrome, August 1974. The newly crowned British 20 kilometre champion, Maurice Burton waves his bouquet. Sections of the crowd are booing. Is it because the champion rode a tactical race, not killing himself in the winning break, conserving his sprint? Perhaps, but Burton has just made history, he is Britain's first black senior champion.

World Road Championships – Quinn Simmons Solo in the Junior Men Road Race

A cracking ride from 18 year-old bearded American Quinn Simmons, a barn door of a man who goes to World Tour team Trek Segafredo for 2020. We were roadside to take in the action.

Zürich Four Days 2011 – Day One

From the chaos emerged a track centre bar and restaurant, cabins for us, work space for the mechanics - and something to race on. I can't say too much about the track - or Pete will slap me, but it obviously can't be as smooth as a permanent one. The stadium restaurant is good; we get one meal each day - last year it was two. Maybe they figure that since it's only four days we don't need fed as much?

Scottish Hill Climb Championships 2013 – “Up The Kirk!”

As the storm clouds grew over the Wallace Monument the anticipation increased ahead of "Up the Kirk 2013" which had the honour of incorporating the Scottish Hill Climb Championships. The volunteers of the host club, Stirling Bike Club, got the course set up as a few nervous riders did some last minute reccies and stressed about gear ratios and tyre pressures.

Sandy Gordon – Part Two: Shipyards and Scottish Championships

In Part One of our interview with Sandy Gordon, we heard about his horror crash at the 1966 Tour of Austria and missing the Jamaica Commonwealth Games, helping Brian Temple secure a silver medal at the 1970 Commonwealth Games and racing in the Tours of Scotland, Czechoslovakia - and getting banned for racing in South Africa at the Rapport Toer. We continue the chat by finding out more about Sandy's other overseas races and his many domestic successes...

Alejandro Valverde reaches seventh heaven

After six times finishing on the podium of the Men Elite Road World Championship, Alejandro Valverde claimed the gold medal for Spain for the first time at the age of 38. He rode away up the Höll, the gruelling climb at the end of the race, along with France’s Romain Bardet and Canada’s Michael Woods to beat them in a four-man sprint after the return of the Dutchman Tom Dumoulin. The final event crowned a wonderful week of sport in Innsbruck-Tirol.

Alex Coutts – in Asia

Scottish rider, Alex Coutts, who is a regular interviewee on VeloVeritas, has been riding in Asia this season for the Giant Asia Race Team; it's now been five months since his season started in the Tour of Langkawi. As "The Burntisland Buzzard" is training again in Spain for a hard six week period of racing in China, Japan and Korea, we thought it was about time we got an up-date on life competing in the UCI Asia Tour circuit.
