Scottish 10 Mile TT Championships 2012

HomeRaceRace ReviewsScottish 10 Mile TT Championships 2012

The Jason MacIntyre Memorial Trophy stays on Dooleys Cycles’ Arthur Doyle’s mantlepiece for another year, after he edged the win this morning in the Scottish 10 Mile TT Championships 2012 by a single second from teammate Iain Grant, with Gavin Shirley in 13th place backing them up for the Team prize in a time which we think is a new Scottish Competition Team Record by four seconds.

Paisley Velo’s Ben Peacock was third a meagre four seconds back.

10 Mile TT Championships
Arthur retains his title at the Scottish 10 Mile TT Championships 2012.

All three riders were off in the last 10 starters and so rode in cold rain which became steadily heavier throughout the event, the headwind to the turn becoming stronger and perhaps being countered somewhat by the increasing volume of traffic on the Langbank – Port Glasgow road.

10 Mile TT Championships
Second place by only one second, Iain Grant.
10 Mile TT Championships
Ben Peacock looked very powerful, and took the bronze.

Rapha Condor pro James McCallum was fourth at 30 seconds behind Arthur, and when we saw him warming up on the course (one of only a handful of riders we spotted doing so), we thought he was taking the event seriously and looked very, er, Sharp.

10 Mile TT Championships
Fourth for Jimmy, but the Tour Series crit in Kirkcaldy next Tuesday evening will be more his cup of tea.

There were a number of riders who impressed with their supple pedalling action and smooth style, but the top times came from guys who had the horsepower to battle the tough headwind into the slightly uphill outward leg, and hoof the 11t round in the tailwind back to the timekeeper – but with six riders getting under 21′ and a further 18 beating the 22′ mark, it shows that despite the horrid conditions for spectating, it wasn’t a slow morning.

Fastest Lady, Sian Tovey.

Sian Tovey (Dooleys Cycles) took the honours in the Ladies race, with a comfortable 27 second win over Christine McLean (Shetland Wheelers). Shelley Farrar (DTCC) taking the bronze medal a further 29 seconds back.

Only four Juniors registered times in their event, the low entry numbers surely being something of a worry, Nevis Cycles’ Ben Miller was the fastest from Craig Ward (Ythan CC) and Thomas Dees (Cuilan Wheelers).

First Junior, Ben Miller.

The Dooley Cycles guys who organised this event did a great job, with the marshalls, course markers and warning signs plentiful and well positioned, but I reckon the guy who was blatantly following his rider in his car, spare wheels and bike at the ready, WorldTour style, was lucky there didn’t appear to be any mobile commissaires out and about…

VeloVeritas is back at a Grand Tour, La Vuelta 2019. This year it kicks off with a super-fast team test around the salt lagoons of Torrevieja before heading straight into the mountains on stage two - no 'easing in' to this race. Martin and Ed have taken advantage of the hospitality of VV amigo and local resident, Al Hamilton - formerly of the Dear Green Place that is Glasgow - to catch the primero quatro tappas.

La Vuelta a España 2012 – Stage 9: Andorra – Barcelona 196.3 km

Joaquim Rodriguez is building on the foundation of respect he laid at the Giro. The little Catalan isn’t sitting around waiting on Froome bludgeoning him in the ‘contra reloj’ on Wednesday; he’s riding like a champion, ‘la course en tete’ – at the head of the race, especially when heading 'home' to Andorra.

Scottish 12 Hour Time Trial Championship 2008

Steve Beech has ridden two Milk Races and ten 12 hour races, so when he tells you that this year's Scottish '12' was the hardest one he's ever ridden, he knows what he's talking about. He's also held the Scottish record, with 275.258 miles - set in the Glasgow 12 in 1991, until Joe Wilson updated it; that distance is however, still the Scottish vets record.

Tour of the Campsies 2021 Goes to Chris Smart

We liked our jaunt to the Tour of the Campsies last year and feel at home among the rolling countryside and green hills there so we headed west, first of all paying our respects to the Robert Millar mural at the foot of the Crow Road; when you watch Roglič take the Lagos di Covadonga stage in the Vuelta it’s difficult to imagine the wee fella from Glasgow winning that stage – but win it he did.

James McKay Blog – We’re Racing, But…

C’est la vie. After filling most of Saturday with a dozy nine hour drive, the team arrived in the medieval village of Sillans-la-Cascade. We were greeted with a hearty four-course feast, courtesy of the host family who would be looking after us. This set the theme for the week; each meal was both tasty and enormous. With 1000km to ride in the next seven days plenty of fuel was certainly welcomed.

Mark Stewart – This Young Scot is British Points Race Champion 2014

At the next Commonwealth Games there’ll be no David Millar or ‘Jamesie’ and even the perennial Evan Oliphant might not make it to Gold Coast City, Australia in 2018. But Dundee’s Mark Stewart should be there; at just 19 he took sixth place in the 20 K Scratch Race in Glasgow behind New Zealand’s World’s Omnium medallist, Shane Archbold with the distance being covered in 22:43 @ 52.819 kph – that’s quick.

Le Tour de France 2011, Stage 10 – a little tourisme

Yesterday we arrived in Rodez as planned, picked up the hire car without any bother, and got ourselves, eventually, after getting lost a couple of times, to the hotel - one of these typical French 'pod' rooms, but it's okay with it's bunk beds and little shower room / toilet. A drive up to the Permanence, aka the Press Headquarters, to pick up our race accreditation, and we'd be all set for a pretty cruisy Rest Day. Only, the Permanence happened to be over two hours drive away, and once there, we found that only Ed's 'creds' were ready - mine hadn't been "approved by Julia" (the head ASO cred issuer).
