Praia de Pedrogão

32.4 km, 212m ascent today, in the stage to Praia de Pedrogão. What a FARCE. My TT bike was exactly at the right length when I came to this race, yet at the prologue they told me it was 1cm past the limit… It was duly cut and shortened.

Today, remarkably it was 2cm passed the limit! Did the bike grow? No, it was bloody measured with some contraption a 10 year old might have bashed together. It’s a disgrace.

This is supposedly ‘elite’ sport, yet the principles of metrology seem completely lost on the people who make the rules: The ground was uneven, the machine was in no way calibrated, the angle of the verticals from which the measurements were taken weren’t exact, the bike was leant on the machine at an angle and there was a massive parallax error depending where you stood; hence the massive 2cm difference from one day to the other although the bike was actually shortened since the prologue.

Anyway, what this meant was that I had to change my stem, and race on a bike which was new and awkward, as well as have next to no warm up. Luckily it was a non-technical course.

The funny thing was he was sending loads of guys back… All wrong apparently.

My boss I think sensed my temper rising and took me away from the man.

I swear such a lack of rigour would be unacceptable in any other industry.

I wanted to do a good TT, hence the easy day the day before, but there you go…

Praia de Pedrogão
Alejandro is a class act.

On the bright side, we won the stage!

Alejandro Marque blitzed the course to win by a big margin. It was truly impressive and goes to show his 3rd place in the Spanish nationals was no fluke.

Musical Chairs – Tomás Swift-Metcalfe Blog

I haven’t raced since September 1st. I’ve been working hard though, on Swift Momentum Sports (SMS), and restoring an old building and of course, some training. SMS is doing pretty well. I’m glad to have shown people some fantastic cycling and running, as well as to have trained some very good athletes. My professional cycling career, however is pretty much over. I wasn’t renewed for the 2014 season.

Volta ao Alentejo

At the Volta ao Alentejo I spent the majority of every single stage on the front of the bunch controlling the race. All four days. Our sprinter was quite well placed to win the race, so I was quite happy to do this.

Tour de San Luis – prequel

After an eight hour car journey, fourteen hours in planes and a lot of hanging around, came the bus ride from Mendonza to San Luis. Mendonza is a wine producing region and is heavily farmed. For hundreds of kilometers there are well arranged crop and dispersed housing, like an endless suburb. It's not picturesque.

Freshly Glued Tubs – the British National Road Race Championships 2012

The nationals are one of my favourite events of the season. The race is strange because I have no specific job to do, no pulling on the front, no marking, no driving the break and no one to let down apart from myself. The first British Elite Championships I took part in were in 2008, somewhere in Yorkshire.

A Good La Vuelta a Espana?

Barring accidents or a dreadful time trial on Saturday it looks like Alejandro Valverde has stitched up his first Grand Tour (at last!). At the end of all of the big stage races we need to ask some questions and La Vuelta a España throws up some thought-provokers!

La Vuelta a España, Stage 15: Notes from Lagos de Covadonga

It's 10:00 pm and we've just finished dinner in our 'local' at Cangas de Onis, we were here last night too. The Mahou is cold, the food is good and the wi-fi is free. It's a working dinner, words and pictures get dealt with in between patatas bravas and chorizo. 'Lagos de Covadonga' - one of the Vuelta legends.

Spokes Race Team Launch 2019

Having a fund raiser a week before the first payday after New Year might not seem like the best idea in the world, with most folk waiting patiently for their bank balance to be replenished. Craig Grieve and his team had other ideas however and delivered a winning formula for the Spokes Race Team Launch 2019.
