La Vuelta a España 2012 – Stage 19: Peñafiel – The Lastrilla 178.4 km

-

HomeRaceRace ReviewsLa Vuelta a España 2012 - Stage 19: Peñafiel - The Lastrilla...

Hola! It’s a bit like being in a Vuelta sprinters’ stage, this morning in Peñafiel; dry tundra, deserted low rise blocks to the left and right and all under a cloudless high plains sky.

It just needs us to catch sight of David Moncoutie sitting at the back of the peloton.

Yes, VeloVeritas is in Spain, headed for the Bola del Mundo.

Peñafiel
Fast Phil takes his second stage.

Due to the 36 kph early stage average we didn’t see the finish of yesterday’s stage – we had to bolt for the airport.

They early hours were of the ‘paint drying’ variety as a Caja Rural and an Andalucia plugged on in a ‘TV break’ whilst the peloton chatted and The Shack kept them at around five minutes.

Things livened up at the death, though.

Our friend, Sean Weide the press and PR man for BMC put us in the picture;

“Philippe Gilbert won his second stage of the Vuelta a España on Friday to deliver the BMC Racing Team its third victory of the three-week race. (Adding to Steve Cummings’ stage 13 win)

“The former Belgian national road and time trial champion charged up the finishing straight and held off Alejandro Valverde (Movistar Team) and Daniel Moreno and Joaquin Rodriguez (both from Katusha Team) to score his second win of the season.

“As when he won Stage 9 in Barcelona, Gilbert relied on the efforts of his teammates.

“Alessandro Ballan, Klaas Lodewyck and Mauro Santambrogio made the front group with Gilbert when the peloton split on a technical descent in the final 15 kilometres.

“Then Ballan helped close a gap to a breakaway of four with the final kilometre in sight.

“‘I like this kind of finish with a long, not too severe climb’, Gilbert said. ‘We did a great race with the team, especially with Lodewyck and Ballan. (Santambrogio crashed with five kilometers to go.)

“When I have a teammate like Ballan – a world champion and a winner of Flanders – I have a lot of respect for him.

“When I saw the work he did for me, I said to myself, I cannot lose’.”

Peñafiel
Ian Stannard gets a quick wheel change.

Dave provided the GC info: Alberto Contador leads from Alejandro Valverde @ 1:35 and Joaquim Rodriguez @ 2:21.

The way Contador is riding it looks like his race to lose, but this is a race of surprises and the Bola is custom made for Rodriguez.

In around nine hours, there’ll be no need for conjecture.

Adios.

Peñafiel
Looks kinda sore, doesn’t it?

Ed Hood
Ed Hood
Ed's been involved in cycling for over 50 years. In that time he's been a successful time triallist, a team manager and a sponsor of several teams and clubs. He's also a respected and successful coach and during the winter months was often working in the cabins at the Six Days for some of the world's top riders. Ed remains a massive fan of the sport and couples his extensive contacts with an inexhaustible enthusiasm for the minutiae and the history of our sport. In February 2023 however, our dear friend and beloved colleague Ed suffered a devastating stroke and faces an uncertain future; Ed has lost his ability to speak, to read, and has lost movement on the right side of his body. He's working with speech and physical therapists on rehabilitation, but all strokes are different and each patient responds differently, so unfortunately recovery is one day at a time. Ed ran his own business installing windows, and will probably not be able to work again. Please consider joining us to make a contribution to Ed's GoFundMe page to help stabilise and secure his future.

'Andy talks tough !' say the headlines, he did try his best yesterday, his men used whatever was left to drive up the lower part of the Col du Tourmalet - then he went for it. However, not for one moment did it look like Alberto Contador was under pressure.

Giro d’Italia 2012 – Stage 2: Herning 206km. Cav is King!

Giro d'Italia 2012 - Stage 2 and Cav is King. If these were Medieval times I'd have to throw myself on his mercy. Prostrate myself at the foot of the steps to the Sky bus, next Monday in Frosinone. Trust that in the joy of his re-confirmation as king of Denmark he'd be merciful.

La Vuelta a España 2014 – Stage 2; Algeciras – San Fernando 174.4km. Bold Bouhanni

Stage Two had been hailed as one where the cross winds could blow things apart from the off but fortunately the Weather Gods remained benign and we were treated to a high speed finale where F des J and Nacer Bouhanni demonstrated again that they know exactly how to handle fast, technical finales. The wiry Frenchman was in a class all of his own after a beautiful lead out by his boys and in particular last man in the train, Geoffrey Soupe who rode a magnificent finale for his Capo.

Scottish Road Race Championship 2013 – Gary Hand at Last!

On a gloriously sunny Sunday afternoon in North East Scotland, Herbalife-Leisure Lakes Bikes' Gary Hand finally took the Scottish Road Race Championship after a blistering attack on the main climb of the day took him clear of 2012 champion, James McCallum (Rapha Condor JLT) and Davie Lines (MG-Maxifuel Pro Cycling) over the top of the hill.

Abandon Vehicle

Abandon Vehicle ... Three days after Lierde there was a race in Wallonie, a race I intended to do, well that was until the team vehicle almost went up in flames. A Belgian team manager lets us use the team vehicles to get about to races... so I can't really complain too much. They are rather old though, and this one in partcluar apparenty had 450,000km on the clock - maybe time to get a new one?!

Dan Patten Blog; Only a matter of time…

Time again for a Dan Patten Blogupdate as this 2012 season in Belgium continues. Yet again the consistency has continued but also now I can happily say that consistency has been rewarded with some wins.
