Copenhagen Six Day 2013 – Day Four

HomeDiariesCopenhagen Six Day 2013 - Day Four

It’s a lunchtime start today at the Copenhagen Six Day 2013, it’s a Sunday, Junior Senior’s ‘Everybody’ is a cool tune to organise the clothing to – but the bad news is that someone has pinched some of Sebastian Lander’s new BMC kit. I did think there were some dodgy looking youths among the ViPs last night.

Most of the guys are ‘flat’ today – with some it’s just battle fatigue, but some will no doubt be recovering from the post-race party which went on ‘til 05:00.

But Barth’s not ‘flat,’ he arrives with blaring ‘boogie box’ creating white noise as it battles with the stadium PA; he’s not big on training, likes night clubs, has an all over tan and two ear rings – and has an old Sercu fan like me shaking my head.

And he’s taken to wearing his crown and cape during the ‘balustrade’ sprint, oh dear…

The house is full; but mostly on free tickets from the Danish Post Office who are one of the big race sponsors.

The kids whack until the presents spill out.

It’s apparently the Danish Halloween and part of the rituals is that the kids whack some bundle with a stick until it falls apart and then… I lost interest.

Copenhagen Six Day 2013
A nice relaxed changeover for Alex.

The chase was a real yawn inducer; but it wasn’t just us thinking that, organiser Jimmi Madsen was soon track side bellowing to the peloton that he wanted acceleration.

But the lap board at half distance told its own story, nine teams on the zero lap.

If this was a Sercu race, this just wouldn’t happen, one look or gesture would be enough and even then he’d be around after the finish reading the riot act.

Bartko/Hester win – is that the same Robert Bartko who was coughing his insides out the other night?

Hester gets Bartko into the race.

The same man – but not a chase to enter in to Copenhagen Legend, I’m afraid.

A set by “DeeJay/singer” Joey Moe was next – enough said.

Lasse shows the concentration required, taking a sling from Michael.

The Team De’il, and par # 7  hoover the points, then Jesper wins the Derny to keep the Mørkøv name up there.

He’s good behind the Dernys is Jesper, getting praise for his riding in the 2011 Amsterdam Six in the paced races – but no contract for 2012. And he took silver in the European Derny Championships over 40 kilometres behind David Vigano at Montichiara in November.

Copenhagen Six Day 2013
Our American rider Zach rode a great time trial.

The hi-lite of the afternoon was the flying lap, our US guys lead for a while on 13.6 but Bengsch/Kalz – with the latter taking the huge sling from Bengsch – stormed it with a new lap record – 12.5 to win.

Copenhagen Six Day 2013
Bengsch is superfast today.

Kalz works really well with Bengsch.

It was outstanding stuff – that’s one-third of a second off the lap record since the Six started.

The final chase came and went without much fuss.

And now it’s 9:45 pm and I wouldn’t mind vacating my breeze block hutch and trying for an early night, so ‘ciao, ciao’ from Copenhagen.

There's always drama when you work le Tour. We've followed Tour time trials for years; roll up at the start, tell the dude which rider you're following, they give you a windscreen sticker, marshall you into position at the appointed time and off you go. This year, however we were notified that we had to attend a meeting on Friday evening at the Permanence after the stage if we wished to follow a rider. Fair enough - but then they changed the venue a few hours before the meet was due.

Le Tour de France 2010, Stage 15: Pamiers – Bagneres-de-Luchon; Tommy Gun

Voeckler, you have to admire him, he's a racer. Whatever happens, it's been a good Tour for Bbox, Charteau in polka dots for a good stretch and now Tommy takes a big one. Going down to Pro Continental doesn't seem to have affected them one bit - and it's saved them a fortune. It was a tad mad up on the Port de Bales today but great to be there - Monday afternoon, high in the Pyrenees under a clear blue sky with the world's best cyclists just inches away.

La Vuelta 2019 – Stage 1; Salinas de Torrevieja > Torrevieja TTT

VeloVeritas is back at a Grand Tour, La Vuelta 2019. This year it kicks off with a super-fast team test around the salt lagoons of Torrevieja before heading straight into the mountains on stage two - no 'easing in' to this race. Martin and Ed have taken advantage of the hospitality of VV amigo and local resident, Al Hamilton - formerly of the Dear Green Place that is Glasgow - to catch the primero quatro tappas.

VeloVeritas and chums were over at the Belgian season opening Het Nieuwsblad and Kuurne Brussels Kuurne semi-classics. Unfortunately the latter was cancelled but we still snapped away – here’s a selection of our favourite images from the weekend.

Chris Lawless takes GC at the 2019 Tour de Yorkshire – Stage 4

Chris Lawless became the first British winner of the Tour de Yorkshire after defending champion Greg Van Avermaet won an enthralling final stage in Leeds. Van Avermaet (CCC Team) forged clear with Lawless and his Team Ineos team-mate Eddie Dunbar as the 175km trek from Halifax neared its conclusion, and while it was Van Avermaet who sprinted to victory along The Headrow, Lawless came home in second to seal the biggest overall race win of his fledgling career.

Joe Dombrowski – “I think that my best is still ahead of me”

It was way back in September 2011 on the eve of the Copenhagen World Championships when we first interviewed Joe Dombrowski, no one seemed to have noticed that he’d won a stage and finished second overall to a certain Fabio Aru in the Giro della Valle d’Aosta – one of the biggest u23 races in the world.

Daniel Holloway – Setting Fire to Speed Week

The 2014 Giro was a brilliant race, so good in fact that a lot of good racing came to be ignored. Take ex-Raleigh man, and six day rider Daniel Holloway’s (Athlete Octane & USA) setting fire to the Speed Week criteriums series in the USA. ‘Hollywood’ first caught the eye as US Novice 500 Metre Time Trial Champion on the track in 2003; by 2005 he’d won a stage in the Canadian Tour de l’Abitibi – ‘the junior Tour de France.’

La Vuelta a España, Stage 16: Shooting the Breeze in Gijón

Santander airport, the queues are horrible and we'll have another one for the Stansted to Prestwick flight, no doubt. After yesterday's grim weather we're bathed in beautiful sunshine today. The stage start was in Gijón so we rattled up from Cangas de Onis for our last look at the 2010 Vuelta.
