Le Tour de France

Aird Mohr ferry terminal, Isle of Barra, Outer Hebrides, 17:00 Monday.

There’s only one bit of road on the entire island where you can get a mobile signal.

And as for the ‘net, I’ve sworn, raged and cried at trying to get solid internet connections in Europe, over the years.

I’ve even had it go down in the T-Mobile Worlds press centre in Salzburg, never mind Barra.

But here we are, five hours out of Oban across the Minch, on the edge of the Atlantic; Marlene opens the iPad, presses two buttons and in the time it take to write this, www.cyclingnews.com pops up.

I’m amazed, she’s nonplussed; ‘it’s always like that,’ she sniffs.

Hood junior had already clued me in on the stage winner by text (there’s about 400 metres of road, just outside the beach airport where you can receive a text); Simon Gerrans (GreenEdge & Australia) the former Aussie champion is a cool guy – when he won Milan-Sanremo I tried to ring him for a quote but went to ansaphone.

Five minutes later he rang me back – even though he was headed out to celebrate in his adopted home of Monaco.

Gerrans
Simon Gerrans pips Peter Sagan to the line on Stage 3 of the Tour.

Who’s in yellow?‘ I asked my boy; ‘Don’t know, I have to watch Andy at Wimbledon, now!

Ah! those Sky HD boxes, no wonder you don’t see kids playing football in the street, anymore.

Bakelants holds on to yellow – and whilst Corsica certainly was a ‘different’ start to the race, all the ‘heads’ are covered by one second.

Albeit there’s been a lot of skin and splintered carbon fibre been left in Mr. Bonaparte’s home.

Is it me or are the Grand Tour organisers in too much of a competition to see who can come up with the toughest/most spectacular/daftest parcours – you choose?

Gerrans
Jan Bakelants keeps the lead for another day.

The thing about a prologue to start is that it sorts out the status quo and whilst the first sprint stage is still mad, it’s not totally deranged.

But mind you, changing the finish line twice in five minutes doesn’t help . . .

TTT tomorrow – I love them.

Speed, skill, precision and real team work.

Favourites?

Garmin, despite their poor showing in the Giro, Millar, Martin, Talansky and Hesjedal are all ‘mad for it;’ Sky, obviously, but two of their biggest strongest boys, Geraint and Ian came down hard in Saturday’s debacle; Movistar, second in the Giro TTT and winners in the Vuelta, last autumn; QuickStep are champions of the world at this discipline, don’t forget; whilst BMC ran them close and GreenEdge will be on a high after today.

And on the subject of Greenedge, here’s what they had to say;

“Simon Gerrans made history as the first Australian to win a stage at each of the three Grand Tours.

“He delivered the first World Tour victory for the first Australian World Tour team when he won the Tour Down Under overall last year.

“Gerrans continued his history-setting ways in Calvi with a win on the third stage of the Tour de France. It is the second victory at the French Grand Tour for Gerrans; the first for ORICA-GreenEDGE.

“This is a huge win,” said Gerrans. “It’s a huge moment for the team. We have been so close on so many occasions. Hopefully it’s the first of many more to come.”

“This is obviously our biggest win,” added Sport Director Matt White. “We’ve won more than 50 races since the team’s inception last year. We had already won at the Giro, the Vuelta, the Classics and all sorts of races between, but this is the one box we hadn’t ticked off yet.”

‘Box ticked off ?’

Even the Aussies are using SkySpeak, these days.

Gerrans
Simon Gerrans was pleased to take a scalp like Sagan.

A demain; but really I should be using the Gaelic – we’ll do that tomorrow.

Ed Hood
Ed Hood
Ed's been involved in cycling for over 50 years. In that time he's been a successful time triallist, a team manager and a sponsor of several teams and clubs. He's also a respected and successful coach and during the winter months was often working in the cabins at the Six Days for some of the world's top riders. Ed remains a massive fan of the sport and couples his extensive contacts with an inexhaustible enthusiasm for the minutiae and the history of our sport. In February 2023 however, our dear friend and beloved colleague Ed suffered a devastating stroke and faces an uncertain future; Ed has lost his ability to speak, to read, and has lost movement on the right side of his body. He's working with speech and physical therapists on rehabilitation, but all strokes are different and each patient responds differently, so unfortunately recovery is one day at a time. Ed ran his own business installing windows, and will probably not be able to work again. Tour of the Campsies 2021 Goes to Chris Smart

We liked our jaunt to the Tour of the Campsies last year and feel at home among the rolling countryside and green hills there so we headed west, first of all paying our respects to the Robert Millar mural at the foot of the Crow Road; when you watch Roglič take the Lagos di Covadonga stage in the Vuelta it’s difficult to imagine the wee fella from Glasgow winning that stage – but win it he did.

Giro d’Italia 2013 – Rest Day 1: Roundup of the Last Few Days

The Giro d'Italia – if it ended right now it would have been great, aggressive race, but the fact is that there are still two full weeks to go. I did a race preview for, ‘a well known North American website’ so thought I’d take a rest day wander back and see how my tips for the top are doing...

Looking back at the 75th Gent Six Day

Coming to Gent to watch the Six Day, as I have for 20 years, is like meeting up with an old friend, a friend you see just once a year but when you meet you are familiar and easy in each others company. Most familiar is the velodrome, Het Kuipke that hosts the Six Days which has, barring a few upgrades in the bar areas, changed very little during the time I’ve been coming.

Aldo Ino Ilešič – on UHC’s Cosmopolitan Race Schedule

Last year Aldo again played the team role but for United Healthcare, after TT1 decided their future lay with a team where all the athletes were diabetic. Despite all the hard work for others he managed a big wing along the way in the USA’s longest – and one of the most prestigious – criteriums; the US Air Force Clarendon Cup. His 2014 season started in the desert and we thought it would be good to hear ‘from the horse’s mouth’ what the Tours of Qatar and Oman are really like – and how he copes with UHC’s cosmopolitan race schedule.

Yanto Barker – the Man Behind the Le Col Brand

The new Bahrain McLaren team colour scheme for the team’s jerseys and bikes is hard to miss; but it was the little ‘le col’ logo that interested us. ‘Le Col’ is the clothing company founded and run by British ex-pro, Yanto Barker. We found out more about outfitting a World Tour team and the man behind the brand.

A Wander Through Robert Millar’s Palmarès

Drew Wilson’s ‘Robert Millar Appreciation Group’ has generated a lot of interest on FaceBook, with 1,185 members - by now everyone must know he was Britain’s greatest stage race rider until Team Sky and their marginal gains came along – we had another name for that ‘back in the day’...

Fan lessons 101: The Lance Armstrong situation, Heroes, Heroism and Amorality

I was chatting to a friend the other day who expressed how sad he was about the whole Lance Armstrong situation; I think that is something we can all agree on... Heroes, Heroism and Amorality. Then later in the conversation he went on to say how he hoped Sky were clean, thus setting himself up for more potential sadness and disappointment.
