Le Tour de France 2013 – Stage 5: Cagnes-sur-Mer > Marseille, 219km. Genius Cavendish

HomeRaceRace ReviewsLe Tour de France 2013 – Stage 5: Cagnes-sur-Mer > Marseille, 219km....
Cagnes-sur-Mer

When I heard it was going to be a bunch sprint at the end of Stage Five from Cagnes-sur-Mer to Marseille, I knew there would only be one winner. The anger would have been boiling inside Cavendish since yesterday; losing that TTT by less than a second would have killed him.

The chance for him to be on the podium with his boys – gone.

No one was going to get the better of him after that disappointment.

ASO saw it this way;

‘The profile was flat, a sprint was expected, and a favourite for the fifth stage was nominated by just about everyone.

“If you’ve watched sprints at the Tour de France since 2008, you know who the fastest man in the world is.

“Mr Cavendish has won multiple stages since his first triumph at the Tour and in five years he’s now collected a total of 24… and we can expect this to grow even more judging by the manner in which his Omega Pharma-Quickstep team rode into Marseille.”

I didn’t used to be a fan; but now I can’t help it.

Cagnes-sur-Mer
Mark Cavendish – Sprint Genius.

Conventional wisdom is that you measure intelligence with iQ – but people who study these things will tell you that it’s only part of the story.

You can be a genius with your hands or a musical instrument but not be able to count to ten.

For me, Cav is a sprint genius – Cipollini was more flamboyant but much as it pains me to say it, I think Cav is better.

Off his train, Cipo at his peak was virtually unbeatable – but Cav can win from just about every situation.

Here’s our top 12 reasons why we think he’s shaping up to be the best sprinter, ever;

  1. He has to win, it eats him up when he doesn’t; he has that Merckx-like hunger, that desperation to win.
  2. He has grinta, when Ferrari decked him in the Giro last year he got up, gave himself a shake and was back at the top of the podium within days. Check that one out, he came down hard but there was no moaning, the pain and disappointment were channelled into gunning for the next win.
  3. As Louis Armstrong might say; ‘he has all the time in the world.’ The others are bumping, swerving, panicking, Cav’s in his own wee world where everything happens slower. I’ve seen him freewheel, go backwards out of the box then re-launch to win – extraordinary.
  4. His jump is monstrous; the only way Petacchi could beat him was to anticipate Cav’s jump by a second then hope Cav couldn’t come back at him – if Cav goes first you’ve little chance.
  5. He can ‘go long’ if he has to; at 300 metres – few can do that.
  6. He can win without a train – he had to at Sky. But with the QuickStep train getting more finely tuned by the day, that’s no longer an issue.
  7. He knows himself so well, in the ZLM Tour there were no stage wins; he was using it for training – not going too deep.
  8. He really does appreciate team work – it’s not propaganda, he values loyalty and rewards it.
  9. He’s consistent; when you sign Cavendish you know you’re signing a man who’ll deliver.
  10. He’s a powerful motivator. When we spoke to his personal soigneur, Aldis at the Giro, he told us that when the QuickStep team arrived at the race it was just a group of guys – within days Cav had them so that they’d ride themselves into the ground for him.
  11. Glasgow; he was in the break all day, doing spells up Saint Vincent Street – he was brilliant.
  12. Talkin’ Italian; we like that he makes the effort; and so do the Italians – it’s professional.

Tomorrow? Flat but with the wind ready to ambush the unwary – maybe it’ll catch out QuickStep?

Maybe a pig will fly past?

Ed Hood
Ed Hood
Ed's been involved in cycling for over 50 years. In that time he's been a successful time triallist, a team manager and a sponsor of several teams and clubs. He's also a respected and successful coach and during the winter months was often working in the cabins at the Six Days for some of the world's top riders. Ed remains a massive fan of the sport and couples his extensive contacts with an inexhaustible enthusiasm for the minutiae and the history of our sport. In February 2023 however, our dear friend and beloved colleague Ed suffered a devastating stroke and faces an uncertain future; Ed has lost his ability to speak, to read, and has lost movement on the right side of his body. He's working with speech and physical therapists on rehabilitation, but all strokes are different and each patient responds differently, so unfortunately recovery is one day at a time. Ed ran his own business installing windows, and will probably not be able to work again. Please consider joining us to make a contribution to Ed's GoFundMe page to help stabilise and secure his future.

Le Tour de France 2016 – Rest Day 2; Berne. Interviewing Jasper Stuyven and Dan McLay

'Rest day' - it's a misnomer if you're a fanatic; but you could do one interview then hang out, I guess? But if you're like us, confirmed saddos, then it's a great opportunity to get a lot of talking and snapping done. Albeit on rest days you can linger a bit longer over breakfast - which is nice in a week of always having to be somewhere/do something right now or in five minutes. We asked our Trek contact if we could get an interview with Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne winner, Jasper Stuyven.

Commonwealth Games 2014 – Track, Day One

It's the first day of competition in the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the chat in the riders' enclosure before the start of the first track cycling session was that Australia and New Zealand had brought a team at the top of their game - and it didn't take long to become apparent this was true. Australia dominated the first day in a packed Sir Chris Hoy velodrome in Glasgow, taking six medals back to the athletes' village just down the road; two golds, a silver and three bronzes.

Scottish National 25 mile Time Trial Championship 2012

On a grey, damp but mild and fast Sunday morning on the roads around Blairdrummond near Stirling, Dooleys' Ian Grant added the '25' title to the '50' with a fine 52:26; besting Sandy Wallace's Silas Goldsworthy - whose fight back over the closing miles hauled back a 17 second deficit on Grant down to six at the line. Last year's '50' champion Alan Thomson, took another medal for Sandy Wallace with bronze in 53:09. The event was not without controversy, however.

The 2021 Tour of Britain in Hawick

We had a look around Hawick as the 2021 Tour of Britain race carnival hit town, we caught up with friends then headed out on the course, hiding from the wind on Wanside Rig to see the peloton as it headed towards Gifford...

Alfie George – 7th at the Junior World Road Championship

Alfie George took a fine seventh spot in the Junior Men’s World Championship Road Race just 12 seconds away from the bronze medal. We let the 18 year-old from Dundee thaw and dry out after his Harrogate epic then had a word with him about a season which has also seen him place highly in the Junior Paris-Roubaix and win a European title and three British Championships.

Rotterdam Six Day 2011 – D Minus 1

"Hello Mr. Sercu, how's life?" I ask at the Rotterdam Six Day 2011. "Well, I'm still alive!" comes the reply. He's a 'glass half empty' kind of a guy is Patrick, sometimes. But he's sport director here at the 6-daagse Rotterdam and not to be messed with. And he has a lot on his mind; his 'boy' Iljo Keisse may be smiling out at me from the 'programmakrant;' but there's no one smiling at UCI HQ in Switzerland. They've instructed Frank Boele, the organiser here, that Iljo is not to start...

Le Tour de France 2009 – Stage 3: Marseille > La Grande-Motte, 196.5km

Mark Cavendish soared to his second straight win in the Tour de France today to La Grande-Motte, winning the sprint from a small bunch and strengthening his overall hold on the green jersey.

Kyle Gordon – At Altitude on Mount Teide

Last season, after the Scottish Kilometre Championship we said that not many 100 milers have become kilometre riders. We were talking about that man Kyle Gordon, and he's done it again, stepping up to Bronze in the British Kilo Championship with fellow HUUB man and Scot, Jonny Wale taking gold.
