Jamie Burrow at the Christina Watches Italian Training Camp

HomeStoriesJamie Burrow at the Christina Watches Italian Training Camp

You may remember the name Jamie Burrow?

Ranked number one U23 rider in the world; a US Postal man, Pro for seven seasons and the record holder for the fearsome Plateau de Beille climb.

Now he’s back as the link man between Danish Continental team Christina Watches and their British equipment and clothing supplier, Planet X; he’ll be speaking to VeloVeritas regularly throughout the season.

His first contribution appears below – and if you’d like to read more about Jamie we’ve interviewed him a time or two in the past.

This time last year I was traveling the world, sourcing suppliers for a new Planet X clothing range.

One year on and we have made some giant steps forward. Not only has all the hard work paid off, with the new Planet X 365X clothing range now available both in store and online, we are also proudly supporting the Danish Professional cycling team Christina Watches – as official technical sponsor.

The rebranded Christina Watches team is supported by Planet X.

There have actually been quite a few new developments over the past few months, and many a tale to tell!

Not only are we supporting a Pro team for the first time, with our new range of technical clothing, base layers and accessories, we are also supplying our brand new Planet X pro road helmets – and it doesn’t stop there! We have gone the whole hog and also supplied the main ingredient: bikes!

The new Planet X Pro Road Helmet will be used by the Christina Watches team.

And that brings us to another of our recent developments, and new projects; Viner bikes. During the latter part of last year we acquired this prestigious Italian bicycle brand.

Founded in 1947 in the hills of Tuscany, Viner quickly established itself as one of the highest quality, and highly respected, hand-made bike brands in Italy.

Viner have enjoyed many successes in a period covering more than half a century, including World Championship titles and Grand Tour stage wins, and were used by Pro teams as recently as 2008.

Jonny’s lovely team Viner Maxima RS3.0s is setup.

We have been working around the clock to bring this fantastic brand back where it belongs whilst retaining its “Made in Italy ” heritage, having recently developed a new version of Viner’s flagship, thoroughbred race machine, the Maxima RS 3.0.

What better way to shout about it and let everyone know we are here, we are back and we mean business – sponsor a pro cycling team!

This is a whole new chapter for us, here at Planet X bikes. We have designed and developed world class products from the ground up; clothing, accessories, wheels and bikes, and now we are showing them off at the highest level.

The past few weeks have been crazy busy, supplying a Pro team with everything they need is a pretty big task.

Christina Watches
Supplying a cycling team with the necessary kit is a big job.

But never afraid of hard work and some elbow grease, not only did we accept the challenge we took it to the next level in typical Planet X style! We wanted to stand out and show how we always meet goals and often exceed expectations, by supplying our new Maxima RS 3.0 with custom geometry, and the coolest paint job in the peloton.

Each team frame is hand-finished with the individual riders name and national flag painted on the front fork and top tube.

This week has seen me back in a place I never imagined I would find myself again – a Pro team training camp. But for the first time ever, not as a bike rider. I’ll admit its been great being back in the mix with old friends and colleagues from days gone by.

The guys here in the team can count themselves lucky to be in such experienced hands, with sports directors Alberto Elli, Bo Hamburger and Eddy Serry, all fine Pros themselves back in the day, and still full of enthusiasm and the desire to pass their knowledge on to the next generation.

Christina Watches
The team have worked hard on the camp so far, but we have plenty more to do.

Here at Planet X, we really hope this experience rubs off on our own “team favourites”, the British riders Jonny Bellis and Jake Tanner.

Many of you will know Jonny. A bronze medalist in the U23 Road Worlds, a first Pro contract with top team CSC as team mate of Alberto Contador, and then a dreadful, life threatening accident which put his career on hold. Jonny is now fully recovered and is highly motivated for the new season and this new opportunity with Christina watches.

Christina Watches
Jonny is hoping to get a good season’s racing under his belt and rediscover the Pro racing rhythm.

Jake, on the other hand, has come into the team as the unknown quantity. He’s the son of two-times British Champion and general all-round hardman John Tanner, who himself gave Planet X many satisfactions in its early years.

We are only three days into camp but Jake is already turning heads and making tongues wag… never afraid to do his turn on the front, or “put a loop in” as our Wayne Randle would say. It’s actually been hard to get Jake off the front, and he impressed everyone with his pace setting on an 8km climb with a 12% average gradient and peaks of 17%. Shredding the 16 man group, down to only five by the top.

This was also followed by a now “famous” episode of through and off, where none other than team Captain Stefan Schumacher, kept pulling our lad back by the saddle to slow him down!

We all wish our guys Jonny and Jake the best of luck, and hope they can make the most of this chance, and do us all proud!

The team has great mix of up-and-coming young talent, and more seasoned Pros. The atmosphere is great, everyone is motivated, and team sprinter Mattia Gavazzi makes sure dinnertime banter is highly amusing, and keeps us all entertained!

Christina Watches
There is a great buzz in the team, and it’s good fun to be around.

I’ve spent the three days liaising with all the riders one by one to make sure everyone was happy with their new bikes and clothing, and today I suddenly found myself behind the wheel of the team car, with Planet X Chief operations officer, Barry Dunn as my wingman.

Even if this was only a temporary stint in the Sports Directors seat, it sure did feel good!

An Incredible Day – on the Col d’Aubisque, Tour de France 2007

It was completely surreal. It was the 26th of July last year, and we were in Lourdes, sitting in a neon-lit, scruffy, greasy-spoon café at 1:00 in the morning. Our pizzas were cooking in the oven, but we weren't really that hungry anymore. We had travelled to the summit and back down again today, both literally and metaphorically; we'd had a wonderful day working on Stage 16 of the Tour de France which took the race to the ski station, 5,600 feet high, at Gourette - Col d'Aubisque in the Pyrenees, and it had been turned completely on its head.

The Fife Coastal Path: Part Two, Aberdour to Kirkcaldy

For Secteur Two of the Fife Coastal Path exploration I chose Aberdour to Kirkcaldy; to get to Aberdour from my home in Dysart you have to head west to come back east.

The famous Tour de France Roadbook

We often hear about how the riders at the Tour de France study "the Roadbook" to learn the final kilometres of a particular stage, or to identify which stage may be "the one" to go for, but what exactly does the Tour de France Roadbook contain, who uses it, and how useful is it, really? Published by ASO each year a few weeks before the Prologue and in several languages, the Roadbook is also known as the race "bible".

Hamish Haynes – Waging a War on Want

'First race today, took it pretty easy, finished 14th - feel good.' Yes, Hamish Haynes is back to start his 10th season in the flatlands. No World Class Performance Plans, no Lottery funding, just hard graft and dedication. Haynes came late to sport but has been racing and winning in the Flanders since 2003.

Peter Murdoch – The Man Behind Blanca Bikes

Remember Peter Murdoch? He raced at a high level as a junior on the road. In those days he roomed with a guy named Bradley Wiggins, whatever happened to him? Peter runs Blanca Bikes, providing the full package for those who want some serious training in the sunshine – or who just want to potter ‘sans thermals’ and enjoy a beer and some tapas with that vibe that you only get in those old Spanish bars.

La Vuelta a España 2014 – Stage 15; Oviedo – Lagos de Covadonga, 149 km. Przemyslaw Niemiec Impresses

Przemyslaw Niemiec wins today, but it’s just morbid curiosity which compels me to watch Chris Froome (Sky & Monaco/England/South Africa/Kenya) these days – he climbs like a stick insect with Saint Vitus Dance. It upsets me; but distressing or not, it gets him up them hills, albeit in his own mystifying style – off the back, off the front...

More Knocks Than Arms in the Air

The Ribble Weldtite team have had their fair share of problems in recent weeks, with Covid taking riders out of competition, as well as crashes, mechanicals, untimely punctures, bad luck and some poor tactics putting that big win out of reach. Ribble-Weldtite DS Colin Sturgess once again takes us behind the scenes to catch up with what the team have been doing since the Tour Series.

Omloop Het Volk & Kuurne Brussels Kuurne – Day 1

You know you're in Belgium at the Kuurne Brussels Kuurne when the barman is Iljo Keisse's dad - and when there are posters for bike races in the loo! But I'm getting ahead of myself; "live cargo", that's how the airlines refer to their passengers. And that's how we feel: the flight is two hours late and we're sitting on the floor at Prestwick Airport, or 'Glasgow South' as Ryanair would have it, despite the fact that we're 50 kilometres from the city on the Clyde.
